At the turn of the twenty-first century, brothers Helmut and Franz Vonlichten made their foray into commercial music by forming E.S. Posthumus (ESP); a project that predominately fuses orchestral and electronic sounds.
Brought up in a musical household, the brothers were taught from an early age to compose music.
Fast forward a few decades, and with an established background in classical music and history, Helmut came up with the naming idea for Posthumus. Upon further consultation with rock junky Franz, the brothers added the initials E.S. to imply the name of a person rather than a group.
With only three core members in the group (including manager Calvin Sondheim) and no publicists, their first album Unearthed was released to the world in 2001 with little introduction. They banked upon the tried-and-true grass roots approach to get the word out about their music, relying on listeners to share their experiences via word of mouth. This eventually delivered unprecedented success and is still utilised as the primary method of promotion today.
A decade and three major releases later, although not household names, millions of people have heard their tunes, ranging from the NFL, Super Bowl, The Masters, and Cold Case, to television advertisements and movie trailers. They have also collaborated with some of the biggest names in the industry, including Jay-Z and Brian May.
