With the 2009-10 season of the National Football League (NFL) ramping up towards its conclusion, this is the time of the season where things get incredibly competitive. Every season, it is the dream of American football teams to make it to the NFL playoffs, through to the championship games (AFC or NFC), and eventually the final showdown known as the Super Bowl.

This year, the CBS network will be broadcasting Super Bowl XLIV on the 7th of February (five days after the release of Makara for listeners that have actually marked their calendars). It has also been a special time for CBS as they are celebrating coverage of its 50th NFL season.

E.S. Posthumus have provided a huge amount of music for the CBS Sports division, in particular the NFL on CBS.

This includes the variations of the Posthumus Zone jingle used in the introductions, the First on the Field tune when a playing team approaches the field, as well as the AFC Championship themes (Unstoppable and Arise) for the previous two years. These events contribute to some of the highest ratings on the American sports schedule, with tens of millions of people tuning in.

Finally, ESP have the opportunity to create tracks for the Super Bowl, presumably the theme that will accompany the broadcast. However, these won’t be tracks that have already been created, they are doing a collaboration with highly regarded artists.

ESP have shown that they can do collaborations, the main example being Rise to Glory featuring DJ Quik and Bizarre. While some questioned if orchestral elements can be blended with rap lyrics, it seemed to work out pretty well and over time, evolved as the underlying theme for the NFL on CBS.

This time around, the Vonlichtens are in the studio teaming up and recording tracks with one of the most financially successful rappers in America, Jay-Z, and highly respected British rock band Queen.

What will come out of this, I have no clue, but it is sure to be something awesome!
